I read in the manual that i can take pictures at quick intervals by holding down the shutter button, but it doesn't seem to work. Can someone tell me how to do this.

There will be a shooting mode adjustment - your camera is probably set on 'single exposure'. You may need to set the camera to 'continuous' or whatever the camera calls it.
Have another look in the manual where is describes its shooting modes - self-timer, etc...
